In the time of budgetary cuts to all aspects of arts and culture, heritage and its preservation have to rely on simple and inexpensive solutions. Climate is an essential parameter affecting preservation of cultural heritage in an outdoor environment; hence climate change has a big impact on developing strategies for preservation of built heritage. Together with changing air quality, it influences the way and rate at which materials decay and deteriorate. The rate and intensity of biological colonisation is also subject to change. At the same time, sustainability becomes more important in all fields of preservation and imposes itself on the concepts and strategies developed. Green, sustainable and inexpensive solutions, which can be implemented on whole collections rather than single artefacts, have to be developed. Existing preventive measures for outdoor stone statuary are considered. Three case studies, with different restrictions and restraints, are presented and evaluated with respect to the protection they offer, costs, the workload involved and sustainability, as well as possible risks.
