Chondrodysplasias are a group of skeletal dysplasias with abnormalities in cartilage growth or development that result in varying degrees of disproportionate dwarfism. A number of heritable chondrodysplasias are described in humans, and for many of these the genetic mutation responsible has been elucidated (Bonafe et al. 2015). In cattle, a number of different chondrodysplasias have been described, including brachycephalic “snorter”, chondrodysplasia (Ellis van Creveld syndrome) of Japanese Brown and Tyrolean Grey cattle, and generalised chondrodysplasia (bulldog-type dwarfism) in Dexter cattle (Jones and Jolly 1982; Harper et al. 1998; Takeda et al. 2002; Muscatello et al. 2015).
