In 1788 Charles Duncan confirmed the existence of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and news of this knowledge was published in 1790. It included the chart of the strait and the extensive description based on Native oral testimony. This was the first time that Europeans knew the particulars of this specific part of the world. Commercial ventures rather than official expeditions had revealed these secrets. This article explores Duncan’s contribution as well as his reliance upon Indigenous knowledge.
