act as role models and help to address discrimination in the workplace. The new generation of more diverse surgeons emerging after receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) should be encouraged to take up supervisory roles which would not only support their own development but also those of their colleagues from similar backgrounds. Virtual interactions could be used to enable meetings between supervisors and supervisees where distance or availability limit opportunities to discuss pastoral issues. The emergence of wearable technology offers the additional benefit of facilitating international collaboration in training and its application in humanitarian efforts to coach surgeons overseas could be harnessed to address growing disparities in surgical provision worldwide. BME staff are under-represented in leadership roles in the NHS. The recruitment and retention of progressive BME supervisors is crucial to ensure the NHS moves forwards in reflection of the diverse population it serves.
