Balint group training is a method which provides a safe and confidential environment for medical students to discuss their clinical encounters among their peers with an experienced tutor, which has demonstrated the potential to contribute to the development of empathy in medical students. Moreover, greater awareness of empathy will concurrently augment the ability of medical students to deal with emotional turbulence associated with clinical environments. We agree with the authors that intervention is required to enhance emotional regulation and reduce levels of burnout. Whilst we have suggested Balint group training as a means of improving these domains as well as improving individual empathy, further studies investigating the efficacy of various interventions would be required to ascertain the true validity of Balint groups for inclusion in medical school curricula.
