Faculty Development (FD) often focuses on acquiring and enhancing teaching skills. Typical FD programming consists of scheduled events such as workshops, bootcamps, and other opportunities that aim to address individual, departmental, or organizational needs. Aside from programs focused on specific topic areas (e.g. teaching and learning, leadership development), FD offerings are seldom structured in ways that allow faculty members to create, and make sense of, a professional development plan that supports their needs for growth and aligns with organizational goals (Gruppen et al. 2003). FD programs would benefit from a more intentional approach that helps faculty members identify needs and pursue development across a breadth of relevant competencies organized by career stage.
