Abstract Simulation of non-circular particles motion with the Smoothed Profile Method has not been studied in detail due to the challenges in particles identification. The present study, therefore, investigated elliptical particles sedimentation in a 2-D enclosure using a combination of computationally-efficient Lattice Boltzmann and Smoothed Profile Methods. The smoothed Profile Method was used to employ the fluid-solid interaction and to satisfy the no-slip boundary condition at the fluid-solid interface. As a non-circular particle, the innovative implementation of SPM for a rigid elliptical particle was presented and employed for one particle and two particles sedimentation. Moreover, the effect of the internal mass on the particles velocity and angular position was considered. The results of the present computational method were compared to those obtained in the previously published works, finding a good agreement between them. It was shown that the combination of lattice Boltzmann and smoothed profile methods could be used as an efficient method for the simulation of the elliptical particles motion. Graphical Abstract
