Abstract We herein report the preparation, optical properties, and use of gold nanorods for the detection and analysis of additives and impurities in weight-loss healthcare products. Gold nanorods with different aspect ratios were synthesized by controlling the silver nitrate content. The resulting self-assembled gold nanorods, combined with a portable Raman spectrometer, were used as surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates to analyze and detect phenolphthalein and sibutramine hydrochloride in a simulated aqueous solution. The obtained results indicate the high sensitivity and stability of this detection method owing to the use of gold nanorod substrates prepared from 100 μL silver nitrate. Therefore, the proposed detection method has potential for promoting the application of Raman spectroscopy in the detection of such drugs. Graphical Abstract
