ABSTRACT Due to the unique business, legal, and cultural environments of transition economies, that is countries that have recently moved or are in the process of moving from a centrally planned economy to a market-driven system, research findings from developed economies do not always apply and different approaches are needed. In this study, we review and analyze 84 papers on enterprise systems in transition economies published in the years 2004–2016. Based on the analysis of themes and issues investigated, reported results, and trends, we identify gaps in the existing literature leading to multiple promising directions for future research. Furthermore, based on our interpretation of the findings and an existing general framework for information and communication technology supported socioeconomic development, we provide a more specific, conceptual framework that integrates enterprise systems with socioeconomic development.
