ABSTRACT We analyze the impact of conditional cash transfer programs on domestic violence. We present evidence that welfare payments that reduce gender income gap significantly decrease aggression against women. We exploit an exogenous increase in women’s income given by a major reformulation of a welfare program in Uruguay to analyze causes of domestic violence. In line with the models of household bargaining, our findings suggest that fostering women economic independence contribute to reduce domestic violence.
