The five articles that are contained within this special section represent the growth and productivity of the 2012–2017 grant cycle of the Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems (TBIMS) programme. The TBIMS programme has been funded since 1987 by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), Administration for Community Living in the Department of Health and Human Services. The TBIMS programme has provided the infrastructure to form a collaborative network conducting research with the objective of creating evidence-based rehabilitation interventions, as well as clinical and practice guidelines which improve the lives of individuals with TBI, their families and their communities. There were 16 TBIMS centres that fulfilled the following requirements:
