A striking collection of Syntrichia Brid. with epilose leaves was recently made in the eastern Pyrenees (French department of Pyrénées-Orientales). Examination of relevant type specimens and comparison with other awnless taxa indicated that it should be referred to S. ruralis var. epilosa (Venturi) J.J.Amann, which until now was known only from the type locality in Switzerland. Herein, the known geographical range for this variety is extended to France and Sweden. Diagnostic characters, microphotographs, and a morphological comparison with the closest muticous European taxa are briefly discussed, and a lectotype for Barbula ruralis var. epilosa Venturi is designated. A key is provided for the identification of European species of Syntrichia with muticous leaves.
