The title of this article echoes another I have recently published, “Liturgy after the Abuse.” In that earlier essay I identified unison prayer and the haberdashery of office as foci for questions about the practice of ministry now that the dreadful scale of church-based abuse of the young and vulnerable is becoming known. Here such questions are turned on the ceremonial and speech that together make up liturgies of ordination.
