Abstract With the development of deep resource exploration, rapid nuclear emergency response, environmental monitoring, great progress has been made in airborne gamma-ray spectrum (AGS) measurement technology during the past few decades. Its development prospects are closely related to the AGS instruments and data processing technology. The AGS technology can be used to retrieve radionuclide information, which makes it a hot research field to improve the sensitivity, accuracy and detection limit of the AGS detection effectively. This paper focuses on the progress made in the AGS instruments and data processing since 1940s’, deeply reviews the technology characteristics and development status, thoroughly discusses the typical AGS applications, summarizes the current technology trend, and puts forward potential research directions.
