Chinese translations of the Judge Dee Mysteries gained great popularity in the 1980s at the time of first publication. Since then, the translated versions have been repeatedly reprinted by different publishers. Their popularity has led to the production of many screen adaptations—TV series and movies following the examples of the serial stories and portraying Di Renjie (630–700), a statesman of the Tang Empire, as a crime solver. Some scholars have been motivated to conduct case studies on Chinese translations for particular stories in the detective series. Nevertheless, few scholars have studied the unusual examples embedded in the creative writing falling under the following two categories:
