or the “race whispering” from which the book’s title comes, to “focus on unity in ways that can uphold the current racial order and the narratives that maintain racial hierarchies” (p. 169). American voters twice elected a Black president, but only one who ran a deracialized campaign. Where, Price asks, does this leave future candidates who wish to speak more forcefully on behalf of the Black community? There is one thing lacking in The Race Whisperer, and it is significant. Although Price frequently mentions the killing of Trayvon Martin and the subsequent acquittal of George Zimmerman, and she discusses Obama’s speech after the acquittal, there is no in-depth analysis of this important moment. While the book is currently fairly short, it would have greatly benefited from a fifth substantive chapter with a strong analysis of Obama’s 2013 speech about Martin. Price does bring up this speech throughout the book but, unlike speeches that form the foundation of the four substantive chapters, it is not analyzed in its entirety. Given that this was a crucial moment in American race relations and Obama used it to discuss broader racism—a topic that he generally avoided—it is possible that her conclusions may have been a bit more tempered if this speech had been included. Overall, however, The Race Whisperer remains a significant contribution. It is an incredibly well-written book that showcases the power of qualitative analysis. It is important for those who study racial politics in the United States, and it would be an excellent choice for both graduate and undergraduate students. Indeed, this is the type of scholarship that should be read by all Americans with an interest in the continuing power of race in our society.
