led inexorably to anarchism. By all accounts, this conversion came much later, during the Spanish Civil War, and even then it was to a confused type of anarchist thought. Keohane is an expert in cultural theory, not a historian by trade. These respective strengths and deficiencies are evident throughout, particularly in his reliance on outdated secondary sources and hagiographic treatment of White in places. These shortcomings notwithstanding, this biography enhances our understanding of its subject and represents a significant advance for left historiography.
