ABSTRACT One new species of Membracidae, Stylocentrus hui Wang, Zhang & Yao sp. nov., from the Cenozoic Dominican amber is described and illustrated. Based on current distribution of membracids and fossil records, we consider that Membracidae originated in the Neotropical realm after the Cretaceous–Palaeogene mass extinction, the enlarged and complex pronotum originated no later than the Miocene.
