Although we have touched on this issue before, we have to come back to it to say a lot more about the time and the extent of the correction. If we give specific numbers, these are only to be understood as approximate guidelines. Before prescribing glasses to children, we need to think carefully about what we can achieve with them. To prescribe spectacles “to do at least something”, as is not uncommonly done, does not correspond to medical reasoning. Letting the patient wear glasses is not an indifferent measure. Apart from the fact that it is associated with certain costs and dangers, the wearing of glasses often represents a psychological trauma and always certain expectations are aroused. The parents expect something to result from our measure. Glasses should therefore only be prescribed where they can safely fulfil a purpose.
