Abstract We present a very simple formula for the determination of surface tension from only two length measurements for pendant or sessile liquid drops (together with knowledge of their density). The formula is derived from an analytic theory of Morse and Witten for the shape of a drop under a small applied force. We also discuss its validity in the presence of measurement accuracy.
