This article presents a CIM solution for 3D-printing to improve the efficiency of mapping truss structures into polygonal models. The solution consists of model hollowing process and truss structures generation process. In most current studies, both processes were done in 3D space for CAD, which is time-consuming. In this article, a volume-based offsetting method and a hybrid truss structures generation method are developed aiming at efficiency improvement. Both of them are based on Boolean operations. To improve the efficiency of the processes, LDNIs (layer-depth normal images) is adopted as solid representation for its high performance in Boolean operations. Compared with the ones in CAD, the efficiency of hollowing method is improved by three times and the efficiency of truss structures generation is improved by more than 20 times.
