Despite a degree of pessimism about the strength of the party’s political offer to the German electorate, the German Greens performed respectably in the 2017 federal election, polling 8.9 per cent of the vote (up slightly on its previous result in the 2013 federal election) and winning 67 seats (up four from 2013). Nevertheless, this still meant that the Greens made up the smallest party Fraktion in the Bundestag. The party gained most support from the more affluent socio-economic groups and from voters with more progressive value orientations. By contrast, the party performed badly with poorer voters and those with a conservative and/or authoritarian value orientation (Vehrkamp and Wegschaider 2017).
