Abstract The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlation between noise and friction variation through an analysis of data obtained from relative motion of headlining and panel. Tests were conducted using headlining and panel specimens cut from the actual vehicle. The effect of surface roughness on noise was investigated by comparing textured headlining A with nontextured headlining B. To investigate the effect of friction variation and acceleration on the noise caused by stick–slip, the load was changed from 800 to 4,900 (7.85 to 48.05 ) and the amplitude of displacement from 1 to 2 A method was proposed to predict and prevent noise generation by mapping various contact conditions based on the degree of stick–slip.
