Abstract An efficient and clean method was developed for the three components, one-pot synthesis of pyrimidinone/thione derivatives using cyclopentanone, variety of aromatic aldehydes, and urea/thiourea by using cyanuric chloride catalyzed Biginelli-type reaction. The reactions proceed under room temperature in presence of cyanuric catalyst in acetonitrile solvent. Under similar conditions, urea/thiourea exhibited similar behavior and aliphatic aldehydes showed lower reactivity than aromatic aldehydes.
