Abstract Fe3O4@NCs/Cu(II) as a bio-based magnetic nano-catalyst was prepared by adding CuCl2 to Fe3O4@NCs in alkaline medium. A series of indenopyrido [2,3-d] pyrimidines were synthesized by one-pot three-component reaction of 6-amino-2-(methylthio)pyrimidin-4(3H)-one, 1,3-indanedione and various aldehydes using Fe3O4@NCs/Cu(II) as an efficient and eco-friendly catalyst in ethanol at 60 °C. After completion of the reaction, the catalyst was separated by an external magnet and reused for the next experiment. Several advantages of this protocol are good yields, short reaction times, easy work-up and eco-friendly of the catalyst. The structure of the products were confirmed by elemental analyses, IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra.
