Each year, the Journal of Geoscience Education presents two awards. The Outstanding Paper Award recognizes the author(s) of a paper published in the previous year that has had a significant impact—that impact may be on student learning, the field of geoscience education research, broader society, or beyond. Any reader, author, reviewer, or editor of JGE can nominate a paper for this award. The Outstanding Reviewer Award recognizes a reviewer who consistently provides high-quality, timely reviews, with a particularly strong record during the previous year. Any author or editor can nominate a reviewer for this award. Awardees are recognized in the journal and online, and at the joint NAGT/GSA/CUR Awards luncheon at the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America. I am pleased to announce the award winners for 2018: The Outstanding Paper Award goes to David A. McConnell, LeeAnna Chapman, C. Douglas Czajka, Jason P. Jones, Katherine D. Ryker, and Jennifer Wiggen for their paper entitled “Instructional Utility and Learning Efficacy of Common Active Learning Strategies” (McConnell et al., 2017). This literature review was selected for its focus on linking research to practice, specifically by synthesizing the literature on active learning strategies, analyzing the impact on student learning, and providing guidance for adopting the most effective strategies in the geoscience classroom. The Outstanding Reviewer Award goes to Glenn Dolphin at the University of Calgary. Dolphin has a long record of providing thorough and insightful reviews, never turning down an invitation. In his reviews, he consistently pays particular attention to providing additional references to authors that would better inform and support their work. Perhaps most impressive, he completes all of his reviews well before the deadline. The work of peer reviewers often goes unrecognized and unrewarded, so I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the nearly 200 reviewers who have contributed reviews in the last two years.
