Abstract Understanding the molecular compositions of organic chlorides in petroleum and its distillates plays an important role in realizing molecule management of petroleum refining processes. This paper discussed the various advances on analytical methods of organic chlorides in crude oil and its sub-fractions at the molecular level, summarized the known identified organic chlorides with different chemical structures, and provided suggestion on the promising analytical strategy and approach to organic identification in the future.
