Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there lived a relatively young and, as it turned out, rather naïve individual. Asked to think about throwing his hat into the ring to potentially become the next editor of Annals of Leisure Research he did so without much, if any, thought for the consequences. What happened over the subsequent seven years was, in a somewhat masochistic way, a learning experience and a joy; one that reached an end on the 31st of December 2019, when I stepped down as manager of the journal. So where to start saying goodbye to something that has been an intimate part of your life for so long? I would like to take a moment to thank a range of people. This will include a look at some of the articles I have enjoyed seeing through the review and publication process. There are actually so many of these that I could talk about them all day so please if you do not find your article here remember it is not because I did not love your work. After this, I will digress into some concerns I have for the future of the publishing of material produced by academics. Many of these concerns, indeed probably all of them, are not mine alone but this seems like an ideal opportunity to give them another airing. Finally, I will explore what editing the Annals of Leisure Research has taught me about the wellbeing of leisure studies research.
