I first met Larry Dwyer in 1967 – we were studying economics at different Sydney universities – I was at the University of Sydney, and he was at its cross-town rival, the University of New South Wales. We next met at the University of NSW in the late 1970s, where I was a lecturer and he was visiting there, having a break from studying for his doctorate. Soon after that, having completed his doctorate, he too became a lecturer in economics at the University. We became friends, and fairly soon after, co-workers, though after I had left for Australian National University. During this time, we have not been at the same university, but we have maintained a close correspondence, via phone, via mail, then fax, and now via email. As tends to happen these days, we tend to see each other at conferences, though when I am in Sydney I try to call in on him (though he seems to have an aversion to visiting Melbourne).
