As the title suggests, this book celebrates 30 years since the foundation of Schumacher College. it is a collection of essays from a glittering array of thinkers and artists, scientists and educators, poets and writers, all of whom have taught at the College, had a long association with it, or have been a student. The range of forewords themselves make the book worth buying, with contributions from Jane Goodall, Joanna Macy, Frances Moore Lappe, Charles eisenstein, David Abram, Caroline Lucas, otto Scharmer and Brian Thomas Swimme. it is beautifully illustrated by Angèline Bichon, with photographs from Delia Spatareanu. For those not familiar with Schumacher College, it is an independent higher education institution in Devon, england. originally it was best known for its short courses where students would spend several weeks working and studying together in this residential setting. Through its rituals and practices, students learned to live lightly, but comfortably, as part of an intentional community. The College has charitable status and has recently become a provider of undergraduate and master’s level programmes. These take place in the fifteenth-century hall house, the old Postern, which is part of the 1,235-acre (500 ha.) Dartington estate. Many of the authors comment on the campus with its ancient woodlands and stunning gardens which produce much of the vegetarian food prepared in the College kitchen. The history of the Dartington estate is fascinating for its radical social and educational experimentation and more can be found here: https://www.dartington.org/about/our-history/.
