between colonialism and Ortese’s L’Iguana in his essay, and makes important comparisons between the Iguana’s broken speech and silences and the work of Spivak, J. M. Coeetze and bell hooks. Finally, Part IV, ‘An “Uncommon Reader”’, contains an important essay on Ortese’s critical writings, which have been largely understudied. There is also a 1973 interview between the Italian writer Dacia Maraini and Ortese. It is impossible to capture the richness of Anna Maria Ortese: Celestial Geographies and to do it full justice. The collection is capacious, expansive and rigorous. The essays are exemplary and serve as an inspiration to other scholars from a wide variety of disciplines. In addition to painting a portrait of Ortese, this book opens up suggestive avenues for further research for scholars of Italian Studies, as well as those interested in comparative and transnational work.
