ABSTRACT This paper offers a tribute to the research and scholarship of Professor Brian Davies, a lifelong friend and founding member of this journal. It speaks of Brian’s seminal contributions to the sociology of education in the UK, particularly his influence internationally in disseminating the concepts and ideas of his former friend and colleague, the British sociologist Basil Bernstein. It also provides a glimpse of Brian’s unique scholarship and writing style and his enduring support for researchers addressing, curriculum, policy and ‘body’ issues in the field of sociology of Physical Education, health and sport. Perhaps most importantly, it is a celebratory reminder of Brian’s key role in the making, shaping and development of this journal.
