Abstract By investigating the ‘new generation’ of Chinese employees under multiple themes in this edited collection, we have set out new and meaningful findings based on empirical research on their characteristics and behaviour. The present ‘cohort’ of workers studied here was born into the economic reform period after 1979 and has been shaped by the ‘socialist market economy’ it introduced, as well as incorporating the subsequent HRM model which followed. In this summing-up, we highlight the key findings of each contribution to this symposium on the new ‘millennial’ cohort of workers in the PRC, as well as identifying future research directions which have implications, not only for China, but even beyond the PRC, for other emerging economies.
