ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to enrich the concept of national identity by employing the concept of habitus proposed by Pierre Bourdieu to establish a dialog between aspects of identity construction from above and its acceptance or rejection from below by national subjects. Taking the case of Quebec and the study of individual trajectories as a starting point, a debate is conducted amongst the proposals of the different levels of government, the political parties and civil society organizations, and compared with the identitarian transformations of the interviewees. The article concludes with the evidence of the differences between the proposed identity and the national habitus and suggests some of the reasons for these transformations.
