Tourism is a practice of considerable cultural and economic importance globally, but tourism is very often associated with negative environmental and social impacts on local communities, including increased competition for resources and facilities. In protected areas, where the ecological, as well as social and economic aspects of sustainable lifestyles are the primary considerations of 'good practice' management strategies, the challenge for tourism to improve health and wellbeing and serve as a catalyst for increasing appreciation and stewardship of the natural world requires a proactive and inclusive planning processes that protects the natural and cultural environment while improving lifestyles and livelihoods.
