ABSTRACT Rural North Carolina synagogues in mid-century America faced unique challenges. The North Carolina Association of Jewish Men’s Circuit Riding Rabbi Project, following the success of the circuit riding program of the American Methodists and the circuit riding Reform rabbis at the turn of the century, reimagined synagogue life in ways which sustained rural small town Jewish life. This program offered a uniquely southern solution to rural Jews and allowed its participants to pursue their own ideal of the American Dream.
