the greater scope for further investigation. The Alien Jew in the British Imagination is an important study, offering a new outlook on the process of Jewish migration and Britain’s responses. Great care is shown in connecting the concept of space with ideas of race, confidently revealing the impact of how the physical space inhabited by migrants influences how they are perceived. By exploring migration as a process and journey, Ewence superbly demonstrates how anxieties about the future of Britain’s imperial project were projected upon the Jews seeking to escape from darkest Russia. An original piece of research, the approach and conclusions shared from the subject are of great significance not only for British Jewish studies but for all fields of migration history.
