link between the War of Independence and the Civil War. Hickey concludes by stating that, as a result of New Orleans, the British subsequently took an accommodating instead of confrontational approach towards the U.S. This is to do considerable violence to history. The British had not wanted this conflict in the first place, as shown by their withdrawal of the Orders in Council prior to the U.S. declaration of war. Further, while the U.S. continued its march across the North American continent, seizing Spanish and Mexican territory, it never again attempted another assault on Canada. Clearly, the victory at New Orleans, glorious as it was, never did quite extinguish the memory of Washington in flames.
