The microscopic properties of gravel material have significant influences on its macro service performance. In this paper, five different gravel aggregates, namely quartzite, gneiss, sandstone, basalt, and gneiss are selected for X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. The tested data are analysed by JADE 6.0 software with phase search and match on aggregate mineral composition. Aggregate morphology analysis is conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results show that the combined XRD and SEM techniques can be used in aggregate morphology characteristics and chemical composition determination. The fractal dimensions of different types of rock particles are calculated using MATLAB software with the box counting method, which can be used as an evaluation index to distinguish different types of rocks.
