ABSTRACT The article analyses the international dynamics that affected the Great Lakes Region between 1975 and 1985. In particular, it examines the interactions, convergences, and tensions between France and the United States in Burundi, Rwanda, and Zaire. The evolution of the bipolar confrontation and the leadership changes in both France and the US in this decade enable us to detect continuity and discontinuity in the African policies and Cold War visions of the two Western powers, analysing the underexplored Franco-American alliance in the Region and on the continent from an innovative perspective. The analysis is based on primary sources.
