However, his passionate concern, above all, is for a progressive, stable and peaceful nation to emerge, and he concludes: ‘Time will tell whether this could be achievable in the absence of a sense of common values, a “we-ness” that could strengthen each other’s position. In any event the “new” Turkey will be even more challenging to deal with than the “old” one’ (197). Students of global politics, diplomats and specialists in international affairs will find much of interest to discuss in these pages. Not only is it a concise account of the nation’s history from the end of the cold war to the present, it is a good and balanced commentary on the current state of play, which is supported by over seventy-five pages of informative notes – a testimony to the academic thoroughness of the study.
