11 chapters in this part and, as the heading indicates, there are a wide range of settings and groups covered. Settings for assessment and treatment efforts include foster care, the justice system (but not incarcerated youth), college, schools, and medical settings. Three chapters in Part 2 highlight assessment, intervention, or both with specific cultural and ethnic groups including Latino youth, American Indian youth and sexual and gender minority youth. Five chapters address specific interventions: brief interventions for youth with substance abuse and comorbid psychiatric problems, group-based interventions, integrated 12-step facilitation to promote self-help involvement, and pharmacotherapy for adolescent substance misuse. The third and final part of the book includes the chapter “Future Opportunities for Screening and Brief Alcohol Interventions with Adolescents.” The authors further delve into the evidence to support the use of Screening and Brief Interventions (SBIs) as well as the gaps in the implementation research for SBIs. The chapter provides six sets of questions, each from a different set of source materials, to stimulate further discussion and inquiry about SBIs with adolescent populations. Because of its breadth and use of scientific evidence, this book is highly recommended for those who are treating adolescents and for those who are studying for careers in work with adolescents. However, there is sufficient content on the workings and limitations of SBIs for professionals and students in any aspect of substance use assessment and treatment, not just practice with adolescents and young adults.
