ABSTRACT Distributed generation (DG) is one of the essential segments of the arising microgrid idea that empowers sustainable power integration in a distribution network. In DG unit activity, inverters assume an indispensable part in interfacing energy sources with the grid utility. Interfacing can effectively be refined by working inverters with viable control strategies. These controllers have an important role in microgrids to improve system performance, stability, resilience and reliability. This paper reviews different control techniques that can use either isolated or grid connected mode irrespective of AC/DC microgrid. In addition, the specific characteristics of different control strategies are summarized to distinguish from distribution network control. Moreover, various control approaches including centralized, decentralized and distributed controls are compared according to their relative advantages and disadvantages. It also focused the features of controllers along with self-healing control. This review paper will be a good base for researchers working in microgrids and for the industry to execute the research work in real time.
