Abstract This article presents a comprehensive overview of artists’ houses in the Tuusulanjärvi community in Finland around 1900. It article begins with an introduction to the idea of an artist’s house and goes on to discuss the different buildings and the artists who lived there: Ahola (the author Juhani Aho and the artist Venny Soldan-Brofeldt), Suviranta (the artist Eero and the actress Saimi Järnefelt), Halosenniemi (the artist Pekka Halonen and his wife Maija), Erkkola (the poet J.H. Erkko), and Ainola (the composer Jean Sibelius and his wife Aino). The article ends with a brief discussion of the home as a work of art. Konttinen locates the community and its ideals both within a national and an international context, discussing the different ideologies and conceptions that guided its formation and were reflected in its everyday life.
