ABSTRACT Deep foundations of several engineering structures like bridge piers under vehicular loads, marine structures (jetties), and high retaining walls are subjected to overturning effect due to the eccentricity of loading. Evaluation of the response of foundations under moment loading is necessary for a proper design for safety and serviceability. The response of two-pile group in terms of load–displacement and moment–rotation is analysed under moment loading with consideration of nonlinear (hyperbolic) ground–foundation interaction and incorporating pile to pile interaction in load transfer. Ultimate load capacity of the two-pile group is then estimated based on these responses. Parametric study quantifies the effect of eccentricity on load–displacement and moment–rotation responses of two-pile group for different L/d and s/d ratios. The rotation of the two-pile group reduces with increase in L/d ratio for any eccentricity and s/d. The predicted moment–rotation response using the proposed nonlinear theory for eccentrically loaded two-pile group compares well with a measured response.
