Ferguson’s book, We Demand: The University and Student Protests, offered a critical, nuanced look at college student activism from the 1950s–1970s and how the subsequent responses from the government and university administrations set contemporary higher education on the path to where it is now. Ferguson’s purpose in the book was to demonstrate a shift within higher education away from supporting student diversity and activism to regulating and controlling to keep the status quo.
