In their article on the use of brain organoids, Sawai and colleagues lean toward the development of a sort of common moral duty, with a judgment criterion based on the level of consciousness of these organoids (Sawai et al. 2022). We consider this a dubious idea (Stoekl e et al. 2021), for several reasons. First, “consciousness” is a subject that remains scientifically controversial. Second, bioethics should aim to reconcile the ethical goals of individuals and societies, rather than seeking to establish moral duties that, intrinsically, cannot be any such thing. Let us consider these points in more detail.
