ABSTRACT This brief communication seeks to clarify a phenomenon the author calls the “as-if state,” an experience which patients have described in various ways since the beginning of the pandemic. While this state does not seem to fit into already-delineated phenomena such as defensive grandiosity or dissociative states, the author unexpectedly found a poignant and enlightening description of the as-if state in Camus’ The Plague.
