ABSTRACT For shock-absorbing and wear-resistant devices, there is an urgent need for monomer casting nylon (MC nylon) with excellent friction properties and mechanical properties simultaneously. Liquid lubricating oil is known to reduce friction effectively, but it will cause a dramatical decline in the mechanical properties of oil-impregnated monomer casting nylon (OMC nylon). Herein, α-Al2O3 nanoparticles modified by γ-aminopropyl triethoxy silane (APTS) were filled into OMC nylon, and the tribological and mechanical properties of APTS-α-Al2O3/OMC nylon composite were investigated systematically. Compared with OMC nylon, the addition of 0.1 wt% APTS-α-Al2O3 resulted in 19.5% increase in the tensile strength, 33.4% and 29.1% growth in compressive strength and modulus, 30.8% and 33.1% growth in flexural strength and modulus, respectively. Meanwhile, over 44% and 64.8% reduction in the friction coefficient and abrasion quality, respectively, were achieved for the nanocomposite. And the worn surface displayed smooth features, confirming the abrasion resistance of APTS-α-Al2O3. Hence, the combination of lubricating oil and α-Al2O3 is an appropriate choice when excellent mechanical and tribological properties are required to broaden the application field of MC nylon much further.
