Scientometric approaches to the history of science, like other works of digital humanities, provide the most productive insights when used in concert with traditional, well-tested methods of the discipline. This is illustrated by what might be missed through applying a predominantly scientometric approach to the influence of the Spanish Civil War on the history of Spanish entomology. Existing critiques of both prosopography and quantitative studies of scientific productivity are also drawn on for the insights they might offer for assessing both the methods and the utility of such approaches.
